Katarina’s Journey.
Born in the old country of Czechoslovakia to a sportsman family, Katarina's Mum was a volleyball player, so she somewhat naturally followed her Mum's passion and played volleyball professionally for ten years. She then left for university at the age of nineteen and got interested in badminton and all the fitness surrounding her; Katarina loved physical exercise and body movements.
Katarina moved to Australia in 2000 and attended her very first yoga class in 2001. She was in her prime of physical endurance, yet struggled so much to keep up. After discovering Yoga, she fell in love with the new challenge it provided her and was very hungry for the discipline that accompanied it. At that time, Yoga was purely physical practice for Katarina. The Ashtanga style of Yoga taught her discipline of regular practice. Katarina had the opportunity to learn from many teachers while living in Australia and was also given a chance to go to Mysore, India and practice for a couple of months with Sri K.Pattabhi Jois. Unfortunately, this vigorous and physically demanding practice was taking a toll on her body. She started to have problems with her lower back and had to stop practicing entirely for a year. Katarina was devastated at first, but this experience also allowed her to discover Pilates, her second passion. She learned more about core strength, which helped her to return to yoga practice.
Katarina moved to Canada in 2009. She met a new teacher, Tracy Groshak, whose practice was strong yet very graceful; Katarina was immediately interested. It was her first contact with Vijñana yoga, and since then, she has not looked for any other style.
"I felt like I found a home for my body, my mind and my soul."
Shortly after, Katarina signed up for four years of teacher training in this lineage; she finished 800 hours of training in 2016. At the evaluation, Katarina met Vijñana yoga's co-founder, Orit Sen Gupta, who lives in Jerusalem, Israel. Katarina had the opportunity to take a few retreats with her in the past few years.
Katarina deepened her studies and practice with one of the first teachers in Canada certified in Vijñana yoga, Flo Dedame. Flo became her dear friend and teacher who guided and assisted her through her growth.
Katarina is now a full-time Yoga and Pilates teacher, and massage therapist. She is an instructor at a local Yoga studio (Live Yoga) and runs her own home studio in Surrey, BC.
"I love working with bodies, and when I say that, I mean physical, mental, and emotional as well as the spiritual part of the human being. I believe the natural desire of humans is to seek wisdom, knowledge and intelligence whether we are consciously aware of it or not. Our body has it all stored deeply inside, and the practice of Yoga is showing me direction and giving me tools and opportunities to find it. It is a practice for life."
